On Triumph of the Human Spirit's 26th anniversary we celebrate New York City Global Humanity Day!

Triumph of the Human Spirit is a sculpture created by Dr. Lorenzo Pace that towers from a fountain in Foley Square. It is a 50-foot tall, 300-ton, black granite sculpture based on a Chi Wara (antelope) figure of legend for the Bambara people of Mali. The sculpture symbolizes freedom and endurance. Dr. Pace was commissioned to build the monument to honor African slaves interred in the mid-eighteenth century African Burial Ground in lower Manhattan. Triumph of the Human Spirit was commissioned in 1991 and dedicated at the site on October 12, 2000.

Each October since, this statue's anniversary has been celebrated. Please donate and help us continue this tradition!
