Triumph of the Human Spirit is a sculpture created by Dr. Lorenzo Pace that towers from a fountain in Foley Square. It is
a 50-foot tall, 300-ton, black granite sculpture based on a Chi Wara
(antelope) figure of legend for the Bambara people of Mali. The
sculpture symbolizes freedom and endurance. Dr. Pace was commissioned to build
the monument to honor African slaves interred in the mid-eighteenth
century African Burial Ground in lower Manhattan. Triumph of the Human Spirit was commissioned in 1991 and dedicated at the site on October 12, 2000.
Each October since the statue's anniversary has been celebrated. Please donate and help us continue this tradition!
This year's event will be held on Thursday, October 10, 11am–1pm at Foley Square NYC
in the Civic Center neighborhood of Lower Manhattan bordered by: Lafayette Street, Worth Street, and Centre St, New York, NY
