This year we honor:
Nancy Mercedes Zapata
Nancy Mercedes Zapata is a proud Dominican American, a community advocate, entrepreneur, and longtime supporter of North Brooklyn. After immigrating to New York City as a young woman, she worked her way from secretary to co-owner and now president of Control Electropolishing Corporation, a Brooklyn-based business she has led with dedication and vision. She has been recognized by the New York City Council, the Brooklyn Democrats, the Bushwick United Democratic Club, and the Latino Job Service Employer Committee for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the community. Nancy has devoted herself to service, including a role as a trustee of the Williamsburg Charter School. She joined the board of St. Nicks Alliance in 1995 and was elected president in 1999. She became President Emeritus in 2011. When asked what she is most proud of accomplishing at St. Nicks Alliance, she says, “Among other things, I’m honored to have originated our motto, ‘Where Opportunity Grows’—because it truly reflects the spirit of St. Nicks.”
Joseph K. Robles, Jr.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in Staten Island, Joseph K. Robles has dedicated his career to business leadership and community service. Over the years, he has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Business Leadership Award from the East Williamsburg Valley Industrial Development Corporation (EWVIDCO), the Distinguished Service Award from the Kings County Democratic County Committee, commendations from the New York State Senate and Assembly, the Community Service Award from the Boy Scouts of America, and recognition as Puerto Rican Entrepreneur of the Year by the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in 2008. A strong advocate for building opportunity, Joseph currently serves as President of Evergreen Exchange (formerly EWVIDCO) and actively supports local charities and events. He has been a member of the board of St. Nicks Alliance since 2003, served as Treasurer from 2007 to 2011, and has served as Chair since 2011.
St. Nicks Alliance Founders and Founding Staff
We are also proud to recognize a group of our earliest champions — St. Nicks Alliance Founders and Founding Staff — dedicated individuals whose vision and commitment helped lay the foundation for our 50 years of impact.
